Creatures of the Deep

In art class we are doing a project called Undersea Creatures. I like it call it Creatures of the deep.

This project is to remind the people at our school to take care of the ocean. We are going to make our creatures out of recyclable materials to show that we care about the environment as well.

Investigation:

We started our inquiry by going to Siam Ocean World in Paragon to see different creatures of the deep. We took many different pictures of different animals and wrote down some information about them.

I choose to do a green sea-turtle for this project, it will remind people that fishes are not the only animals in the sea. I was also interested in the creature because turtles live for long periods of time and they have interesting shapes on their shells. I think that making a turtle would be quite challenging but I might encounter many problems in making this sculpture along the way.

These were the facts I found:

Scientific Name: Chelonia Mydas

Maximum length: 140 cm

Habitat: The green sea turtle inhabits tropical and subtropical waters

Interesting Facts: The green sea tutle is one of the largest sea turtles in the world and weighs up to 700 punds (317 kg)

Plan:

I have made a plan below to help me finish this project in time. If I follow my plan as close as possible then I won’t have any problems finishing it on time.

Day 1: Blow up a balloon and put 2 layers of paper mache on it. I dont have to paper mache the whole thing because I am going to cut the paper mache in half when it dries.

Day 2: Make the final layer with small pieces of paper mache. To make the shell smooth

Day 3: Make a smooth bottom (shell) out of plates and tape then to the paper mache shell. Put 2 layers of paper mache.

Day 4:Finish the other layer of paper mache and cut the flippers of the turtle from plastic water bottles. Tape them to the shell. Make a head with plastic bottles.

Day 5: Paper mache all of  the flippers (2 layers). I should try to be pretty quick with this one.

Day6: Make a tail out of water botles and stick it on to the shell. Stick the head to the shell. Finish paper maching the third layer for the flippers.

Day7: Paper mache the head and the tail 2 layers.

Day8: Paper mache the 3rd layer and start to paint to dry parts.

Day 9: Finish Painting my scuplture.

 In this project I am going to have trouble making the shell of the turtle. Making the shell requires us to be quick in our paper maching. We need to have 3 layers finished on the balloon. The balloon will shrink over time so this can cause some problems. My balloon shrunk and lot of times and it popped one. Luckily I had 2 layers finished already. One question I asked my self was; How do I do my other 2 layers if I don’t have my balloon. Well that was an easy solution. Make another balloon to take its place!! After I blew the ballon up, I placed it in the un-finished paper mache shell. Then I continued with my next 2 layers.

The next small problem that i encountered, was the bottom of the shell. Since I only papered mached half of the balloon, there was still a side with nothing covering it. At first I cut out  a square and from a cardboard box. I drew the shell outline and cutted it out. One problem, were are the fins going to go. Of corse I could just make the fins seperatly but It would be much easier if I could just make the bottom of the shell with the fins included. 

Another problem I found was the head. I still have not solved this problem because I am still making the fins of my fish. I am having troubles making the head. So far I just crumpled up a piece of paper. I expected that to be the head. Now I realized it looks nothing like a head. I am thinking of researching more about turtles and looking at their head more closely. I should have done this earlier but the pictures that i have dont show their heads so clearly. To me it just looks like a ball. I realized that isnt the case. I will have to make the turtle head be more realistic.

 

 

One Point Perspective Name Tag

In art class we had to create name tags for our folders. They are similar to the ones we did last year. The ones we are making this year need to have one point perspective. There are some important vocabulary in my blog and they would be in Bold Italics.

Investigation

Understanding the One point Perspective:

One point perspective is when horizontal stretches out  slowly to the vanishing point and vertical lines are parallel to each other and are straight. This can also be the other way around; where the vertical lines vanish and the horizontal lines are kept straight. When both lines vanish to different vanishing points then this becomes two point perspective. 

One point perspective includes a horizon. The horizon represents the viewers eye level. The vanishing point would be located on the horizon. Ussualy in one point perspective the horizon line is where the ground and the sky seem to meet.

The horizon line is located where the bottom of the windows are. 

 

The vanishing point is the most important part of one point perspective. Its an area where an object disappears and is out of sight. As things get closer to the vanishing point, they slowly get smaller and smaller until they seem to vanish or fade away. 

 

As you can see in Jun's art work the vanishing point is at the light bulb (yellow dot)

Practice!!

 

These both were my practices for one point perspective. I did many more though. I did a lot of different practices at different directions.

 

Plan

 

I had many different ideas for this project. Most of my ideas were very common, for example: graffiti on a wall. Many pictures on the internet has that already. My too main ideas were a movie theater and a dirty windows.

 

These ideas were creative but too simple. The dirty windows which i ended up doing was too simple and the draft could have had more creative ideas added to make my final product better. 

 

Create

 

First we had to make a draft of our product like above. Then we take a sheet of paper provided by our art teacher. We had to make a border around that sheet of paper which we will cut off later on. Then we make place a vanishing point on the paper or off and make a horizon. Then start making a gird making sure that your vertical line are straight and your horizontal lines more to the vanishing point or vice versa. Then we draw our draw the main details such as where the trees go. Not little details like rocks and small animals.

Then we start to paint our product. Our art teacher (Mr. Pat) gave us some tips for acrylic paints. We have to get a plate and put a wet tissue on it so that the acrylic paint wont dry. After we finish painting and have the small details painted if necessary, then we have to back our work. First before we back our work we have to cut our border around our sheet of paper that we made earlier.

Then we have to pick a backing paper that matches the colors in our painting. I choose blue because my painting has some blue in it and it matches pretty well. Then we had to take a clear sticker and carefully stick our name onto it. First we have the sticker onto the table and we place our name tag onto the sticky side then take the sticker and carefully place it onto our folders. The problem that I had with this was that the air-con had place a little bit of the sticker onto the folder. I didn’t notice it until I placed the rest of the sticker onto the folder. I was left with a big fold on my folder. I decided to take the sticker off and stick it again. But that was a big mistake because it made it look even worse at the end. This is a lesson I will fix in the future.

This is a picture of my final product. I think its so, so compared to my other class members.

 

Evaluate

 

I have learned a lot of things in this unit and the main one is one point perspective. As in my research I saw that a lot of different point perspectives can be used to create realistic artworks with dimensions. I also learned a bit about 2 point perspective with 3D objects as well. 

I think that my art work needs a lot of improvements and I have made a lot of mistakes just for a simple art work. Which is kind of embarrassing. 

I was a bit afraid of acrylic paints (i am usually afraid of painting) even though I heard all about its qualities. I couldn’t paint with acrylics at first so I used a wash for everything. I later realized that my name was too faded so I tried using acrylics and made it stand out more. The bad thing was that I made lots of mistakes and I couldn’t cover my mistakes with a wash. So as you can see in my final product there are bits of darks grey. This also happened to my black lines. The black lines where supposed to note out where the windows are. I made thin lines that weren’t straight. I made even thinker lines that were straight. The problem was that they made the painting a bit distracting to look at. I also think that my idea isn’t that creative anymore. Its too simple and other people could do the same artwork better than this. 

One of the good things though is that my artwork actually showed one point perspective. The vanishing point was off the page but the windows looked a bit slanted which was good because that shows perspective and it doesn’t look like a triangle.

Some of the improvements I could make is try to think out of the box. I should do this by mixing ideas together and doing creative exercises. I could try to sit in corner of my room by my self and think about 2 things. For example a cat and a ladder. I would have to think about how would a cat ladder look like. I would then draw it on paper the best that I can. I have tried doing this a couple of days ago after I had finished my product. The ladder was quite furry with some stripes and it also had a bushy cat tail sticking out the bottom. This was a wacky drawing but at least it was something pretty creative. I could also try drawing imaginary worlds this can help with some scenery projects that we might do in art. 

I could also improve on my painting techniques with acrylic paint. I have to practice  drawing straight lines and using many different techniques such as shading with paint and mixing different colors. I should also work on my color choice. In my artwork I have no shading and my color choice wasn’t that good. I should have blended the yellow more with the blue. Or maybe even better I could use a light blue to show the light and a darker blue where the light doesn’t hit. This could show some shading technique. The colors weren’t very welcoming, even though they were dirty windows I didn’t intend the viewer to feel shocked. Thats what I felt when i saw my finished product i jumped because the colors were not welcoming and the many different lines of black hurted your eyes a bit. I should next time make my colors match the feeling of the painting and the scene. 

 

I saw many other class mates work and I think they did a better job than me. There are 2 people’s work that I would like to look at because they have most of the things in their art work that I would like to improve on.

 

 

Pia's Artwork

I think that Pia had very good color choice. The colors are relaxing and fit her scene. I think should try making the desert look a bit more warmer. She could add some warmer colors and a sun to make the dessert look hot. She used dithering for her shading of the road which I find is a great idea. She also used the same technique for the blue sky and the clouds. This made them both realistic. I think she should have made the sand using the same technique as well to match the rest of her painting. The thing that  I like about Pia’s work is that she used a simple idea and made it really well with her painting skills. Unlike mine which is simple but I didn’t use good painting skills. You can also tell its a desert because of the sand and the plants. While mine is confusing and it takes a long while to realize what it is. 

 

 

Nod's Artwork

 

Nod’s artwork had very good shading skills. As you can see on the letters, he shaded them very well. He made different shades of red and used them to create interesting letters. I think that  I should learn from this and try practicing shading with paint at home. Nod’s background included some streaks of light which is what I tried to make in my letters. He did a better job because I think that he thought about the colors better. I only thought about the color of the sun and drew random lines and different places in my name. Nod also used nice straight lines for his ground escalators. They are not completely straight but they are pretty nice and neat. Nod’s blue has great shading it gives a nice feeling when you look at the blue. One thing that I would suggest for Nod is that his person is vertical. This means if we were to turn the escalator the right way the person would look a very slanted and unrealistic. As I said before I would practice making more shading techniques in my artwork and I would plan my colors carefully before I start painting.

Stage Set

The stage set we had to make was going to be about one of the stories that grade 6 has read in Language Arts English. The stage set had to show an emotion such as, anger, sadness, happiness, fear etc.

Investigate

The first step in creating this stage set was to choose a story and an emotion. In our draft books to we used a graphic organizer to organize our thoughts. I used a list, I put different stories down and underneath I put different scenes and emotions relating to them. I had a great idea but then a friend beside me took it. I had many troubles choosing a design that no one else choose. I finally chose a scene and it was from the book Tuck Everlasting in the “Epilogue” when Tuck sees Whinnie’s grave. This scene is supposed to show the feeling sadness.

After we had our idea, we had to research on some stage set designs. For my research I watched a TV show that used stages.  I watched Guinness World Records and I saw that there were 2 panels on each side of the stage. On those panels were pictures of different people who won a record before. I did a little more research of what those panels were and realized they were called wings. At this time I was thinking my wings should be gravestones or gates.

Plan

In my draft book I created a rough draft of what my stage set was going to look like. My first draft was a page full of gravestones and 2 gates for the wings. My feedback on this was “plain” “simple” and “boring”. After I heard this I could see why, my draft was only a page full of gravestones and 2 gates and nothing interesting. I started a new draft and spent a lot of time thinking, this used up some of my class time.  My draft had trees and gravestones and gates, it wasn’t much but it looked much better.

Create

I started on my stage set an art period later than everyone else so that made me bring my art work home. My painting was very nice; Mr. Pat gave me some ideas on the gravestones. I liked my stage set a lot I really like how the trees came out. The night that I had to finish my artwork wasn’t a very nice one because I remembered that I placed my wings in my draft book. When I checked the wings weren’t there. I had to finish my art work at school. I rushed a lot and someone reminded my about the direct quote I quickly added one with no sources. I also forgot to mount it.

Evaluate

The trees had nice color and the leaves looked like they were coming off of the tree, which was what I wanted. The trunk was also quiet skinny and to me showed a sad feeling. I think that I also did well with the shades on the gravestone. On the place where the tree had the most leaves, under it was a dark gravestone and the opposite when the tree had less leaves.

The gate was pretty good although I could have made a more interesting gate with curves and twists. I also could have made the background a bit darker to show sadness a bit more. I also think that the graves color should be smoother and more of the graves should have words on them. The grave that does have words is Whinnie grave but the words are not dark enough to see.

I choose to compare my work and Junior’s work because we both have graveyards. I think that Junior’s work is much more interesting to see because it shows Junior’s style which is cartoon. I have shown my style but my painting show a mix of my styles and not only one of them. I also liked the use of his wash which was to color his gravestones, I think that if I used a dark background and wash for my gravestones it would look much better.  I think that I had a good size for my wing; I think Junior’s wings are too big. Over all I think that Junior’s art work is much better than mine and if I make this art work again I should make the improvements I have mentioned.

Paul Klee Inspired Work

Paul Klee was a painter that was born in 18 December 1879 Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland. Paul Klee style was influenced by many different art trends, including expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered color theory, and wrote extensively about it. Paul Klee and his friend, the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture. In 1935 Klee developed scleroderma, a rare debilitating disease. Paul Klee died in 1940.

The first picture is Paul Klee’s art work and the second picture is my artwork. I think that my artwork is similar to Paul Klee’s because Paul Klee used different colors to make his grid and used shapes to make pictures, while I used different colors to make the grid and different colors and shapes to make the pictures.

In my artwork I have a total of 8 pictures and each of those pictures represent me.

Here is the meaning of each picture:

1. A pencil and drawing on paper – Some of my friends say that I am a great drawer and I also love to draw and sometimes when I draw I don’t really care how my drawings look and it may turn out to be a stick man

2. Music Note – I love listening to music and I also play the piano and flute. I drew this picture to show that I am a very musical person.

3. Chocolate Kisses – I love chocolate so much and whatever chocolate I find in the refrigerator I will eat it (except for coffee chocolate I hate those).

4. Hamburger – I love to eat. I usually eat a little bit at lunch because I think that the food at my house taste better and by eating a little bit at lunch I will be very hungry at dinner and eat almost everything that is served.

5. Fish – I am very curious about things that seem “fishy” to me and I will always try to figure things out.

6. Apple – I love all the apple products and I raising money for a Macbook pro but it’s very expensive!

7. Soccer ball – I love to play sports and I always try my best and watch soccer whenever I can.

8. Dog – I love animals a lot and dogs are my favorite pets. I might be allergic to them but I still choose dogs as my favorite pet.

In my artwork I used 4 color schemes. I used a complementary color scheme using the colors purple, yellow, red and green. Yellow and purple are opposite colors on the color wheal and so is red and green. I used primary colors which are yellow, red and blue. I used an analogous color scheme using the colors purple, red, orange and yellow because on the color wheal those colors are right next to each other starting from the color purple ending up at yellow. I also used the secondary colors which are green, orange and purple.

I think that I was quite slow compared to the students in my class because I spent too much time on one box and on our last period I had to rush a lot to get it done. I made some accidents for example as you can see on the orange I accidentally put some purple on there and I think that it made my artwork look bad. I saw other people’s work that have not spent so much time on box and have better accuracy and a prettier artwork than mine. I think that if I don’t waste my time I won’t have to rush in the end.

I think that my drawings were pretty good although, they would be more appealing if I have better accuracy and time management. I also think I did a fairly good job on covering the pencil lines but I think I can still work on that in the future.

I think I wasn’t that creative because I didn’t have so many columns and rows and I didn’t have overlapping pictures like other members in my class.

Cubic Abstract

This is my cubic abstract painting. The first picture is my draft and the second picture is my final art work. My cubic abstract has 3 types of colors. It has complementary colors and those are the green and red because those colors are complete opposites on the color wheel. It has analogous colors and those are yellow green and green because those colors are next to each other on the color wheel. It has warm colors and those are red and yellow. My painting has these colors becuase its an cubic abstract art of a picture of leaves and I took the colors from that picture and made different tones of it.
